Bot Identity & Appearance
Make the bot look like it belongs to your server. You can give it a custom nickname, profile picture, banner, and bio that only apply inside your server, without changing how the bot looks anywhere else.
This is a premium feature: your plan either includes it or it does not. It is also off by default. When your plan includes it, turn it on from the Features page, then open Bot identity in the sidebar to set it up.
What you can change
Everything here is per server. Change it for one server and the bot still looks normal in every other server it is in.
- Nickname: the name the bot shows under, up to 32 characters. Leave it empty to use the bot's normal name.
- Profile picture: a square image, shown as a circle on Discord (just like anyone's avatar).
- Banner: a wide image shown across the top of the bot's profile card.
- Bio: a short line of text on the bot's profile, up to 190 characters.
Setting a picture or banner
When you pick an image, a small editor opens right in your browser:
- Click Choose image and pick a picture from your device.
- Drag the picture to move it around inside the frame.
- Use the Zoom slider to make it bigger or smaller.
- Use the Rotate slider to turn it.
For the profile picture, the frame is a square with a see-through circle in the middle. That circle is exactly how the picture will be cropped on Discord, so whatever sits inside the circle is what people will see. Keep the important part (a face, a logo) inside it.
For the banner, the frame is a wide rectangle, which matches the shape Discord uses for profile banners.
Your picture stays with you
While you are lining up and cropping the image, it never leaves your device. Only the final, cropped picture is sent when you click Apply to Discord, and we do not keep a copy of it afterwards. Discord stores the picture on the bot's profile, and that is the only place it lives.
Applying your changes
When everything looks right, click Apply to Discord. You'll see a note that your changes have been queued and are being applied. Discord can be slow to refresh the bot's profile, so you may need to fully restart your Discord app (close it completely and reopen it) before the new look shows up. If nothing has changed after about 5 minutes, and you've already restarted Discord, click Apply to Discord again.
If something goes wrong applying the change (for example the bot is missing a permission), you'll get a notification in the bell at the top of the dashboard telling you what to check, so you're never left guessing whether it worked.
Removing a custom picture or banner
If you set a picture or banner and later want to go back, use Reset to the bot's default picture (or Reset to no banner), then click Apply to Discord. The custom image is removed and the bot goes back to its normal look on your server.
When your plan stops including it
If your subscription ends, or your server moves to a plan without Bot Identity & Appearance, the bot goes back to its normal look on your server. Its custom nickname, picture, banner and bio are removed from Discord within about 10 minutes. The same happens if your server is suspended for being over its plan's limits. You get a notification in the bell when this happens.
While your server is suspended for being over its plan's limits, the Bot identity page does not let you change the bot's look. It tells you why instead. That way nothing you upload gets lost while the bot is not allowed to show it. Once your server fits its plan again, you can change it as usual.
If the bot is missing the Change Nickname permission on your server, it cannot remove its own nickname. It still removes the custom picture, banner and bio, and the notification tells you the nickname stayed, so you can change it in Discord yourself.
Your settings are not deleted. The Bot identity page still remembers your nickname, bio, picture and banner, and shows a note that your custom identity is paused and why. That note shows even when you switched the feature off on the Features page, because switching it off does not change what the bot shows. While the bot is still busy removing it, or when Discord did not let the bot change its own profile, the page tells you that instead. Once your plan covers the feature again, an old warning about Discord refusing the change goes away by itself.
When your plan includes the feature again (for example you subscribe again or upgrade), the bot puts your saved identity back by itself, again within about 10 minutes. You don't have to set anything up a second time.
If Discord does not let the bot put it back (usually because a permission is missing), you get a notification that says what to check, and the page shows it too. The bot tries again by itself every few hours. Once you fixed the permission, clicking Apply to Discord makes it try again within about 10 minutes.
If only the Change Nickname permission is missing, the bot still puts back your picture, banner and bio, and the notification tells you the nickname could not be set. Give the bot that permission and click Apply to Discord to put the nickname back too.
If a picture does not come back
We never keep a copy of your pictures, so to put them back the bot asks Discord for them again. Discord usually still has them, but not always. If Discord is only having a short hiccup, the bot simply tries again about half an hour later. If Discord says the picture or banner is really gone, or the bot still cannot get it after trying for about 3 hours, your nickname and bio still return, and you get a notification asking you to upload the picture again on the Bot identity page.
Good to know
- Only the server owner can change the bot's identity. Delegated managers can view the page but not apply changes.
- Images must be still pictures (PNG, JPG, or WebP), up to 10 MB. Animated (GIF) profile pictures are not supported for now.
- Discord limits how often a bot's picture can change, so if you make several changes very quickly you may be asked to wait a little before the next one.
- If a change cannot be applied (for example the bot is missing the permission to change its own nickname on your server), nothing breaks, the change simply does not take effect, and you'll get a notification in the bell explaining what to check. For a nickname problem, make sure the bot's role is allowed to change nicknames.
