Temporary voice channels

Give members their own voice channels on demand. You set up a lobby voice channel; when someone joins it, SnowstormBot creates a personal voice channel for them, moves them in, and deletes it again once everyone leaves. No more empty channels cluttering the server.

The Temporary voice feature is off by default and depends on your plan. Turn it on from the Features page, then open Temporary voice channels in the sidebar to set up a hub.

Setting up a hub

  1. Open Temporary voice channels in the sidebar and add a hub.
  2. Pick the lobby voice channel. This is the channel members join to get their own channel. It should be empty otherwise (joining it spawns a new channel).
  3. Pick the category the new channels are created under. The list only shows categories where the bot has everything it needs (see Requirements and permissions). If the category you want is missing, give the bot those permissions there first.
  4. Set a channel name template. Use {user} to insert the member's name, for example {user}'s channel.
  5. Optionally set a user limit for the spawned channels.
  6. Make sure the hub is enabled and save.

How members use it

A member just joins the lobby voice channel. SnowstormBot then:

  • Creates a new voice channel under the category (named from your template),
  • Moves the member into it,
  • Gives that member control of their own channel.

When the channel empties out, SnowstormBot deletes it automatically.

The control panel

Each spawned channel gets a small control panel message with buttons that only the channel's owner (the member it was created for) can use:

ButtonWhat it does
RenameChange the channel's name.
Set user limitSet or clear how many people can join.
Lock / UnlockStop or allow @everyone from connecting. The bot keeps its own access, so it can always unlock or delete the channel again.
KickDisconnect someone who is in your channel. It only works on people who are actually in your channel right now. If they are somewhere else, or not in voice at all, the bot tells you and leaves them alone.

If anyone else taps a button, they get a private notice and nothing happens. If the bot can't do what was asked, for example because someone changed its permissions on the channel, the owner is told so instead of seeing a success message.

Requirements and permissions

On the category the channels are created under, SnowstormBot needs:

  • View Channel (to see the category at all),
  • Manage Channels (to create, rename, and delete the channels),
  • Manage Permissions (to give the owner control of their channel),
  • Connect and Move Members (to move members in and to kick them from a channel).

Server-wide permissions count too, as long as the category doesn't take them away. The dashboard won't let you save a hub with a category that is missing any of these.

Joining the lobby does nothing?

If a new channel isn't created when someone joins the lobby, the bot is almost always missing Manage Channels or Move Members, or it can't see / connect to the category. Check those, then try again.

Good to know

  • Leftover channels are tidied up automatically: if the bot restarts while a channel is empty, or it is removed from the server, those temporary channels are cleaned up.
  • The lobby itself is never deleted; only the channels spawned from it are.

Plan limits

How many hubs (lobby setups) you can have in a server depends on the owner's plan. If your plan includes zero, the feature shows Requires plan upgrade on the Features page and can't be turned on. See Plans & limits.
