Role menus

Let members give themselves roles. A role menu is a message SnowstormBot posts in a channel with a set of roles on it; members click to add or remove a role from themselves, no moderator needed. Use it for colour roles, pronouns, region or notification pings, game or interest roles, and so on.

The Role menus feature is off by default and depends on your plan. Turn it on from the Features page, then open Role menus in the sidebar to set one up.

Creating a role menu

  1. Open Role menus in the sidebar and click New menu.
  2. Give it a name (this is just a label for you; it isn't shown to members).
  3. Pick the channel to post it in.
  4. Choose a display style and a selection mode (see below).
  5. Optionally set an embed title, description, and colour, and a dropdown placeholder.
  6. Add your roles: for each one, pick the role and give it a label (and an optional emoji).
  7. Click Save, then Publish to post the message.

A menu can offer up to 25 roles.

Buttons or a dropdown

Each menu renders in one of two styles, your choice per menu:

  • Buttons — a row of buttons, one per role. Members tap a button to toggle that role. Best for a handful of roles.
  • Dropdown — a single drop-down list. Members open it and tick the roles they want. Tidier when you have lots of roles.

Multiple or unique

  • Multiple — members can hold any combination of the menu's roles. Each one toggles on and off independently.
  • Unique — members can hold only one of the menu's roles at a time. Picking a new one removes the others from that menu. Good for "pick your colour" or "pick one region".

A menu only ever touches the roles on that menu. Any other roles a member has are left alone.

What members see

After you publish, anyone in the channel can use the menu:

  • Buttons: clicking a button adds the role if they don't have it, or removes it if they do. SnowstormBot replies privately (only they can see it) to confirm.
  • Dropdown: their selection is applied when they choose, granting the roles they ticked and removing the menu's roles they unticked.

Editing and re-publishing

Edit a menu any time, then click Publish again. SnowstormBot edits the existing message in place rather than posting a new one, so links to it keep working. If the original message was deleted, publishing posts a fresh one.

Deleting a menu removes its configuration. The already-posted message is left in the channel, but its buttons stop doing anything, so delete that message yourself if you no longer want it.

Roles SnowstormBot can assign

The bot's role must be above the roles it hands out

Discord only lets the bot manage roles below its own highest role. If a role sits at or above SnowstormBot's top role, clicking it gives a private "I can't manage that role" notice and nothing changes. Fix it by dragging the SnowstormBot role above those roles in Server Settings → Roles.

Roles managed by another integration (for example a Twitch subscriber role or a booster role) can't be assigned by hand and won't work on a menu.

Plan limits

How many role menus you can create depends on your plan. If your plan includes zero, the feature shows Requires plan upgrade on the Features page and can't be turned on. See Plans & limits.

Tagging roles, members and channels

In the Embed description box you can type @ to tag a role or member, or # to link a channel, the same way as on Send a message. This text is shown inside an embed, and Discord never sends a notification for tags inside an embed, so there are no Ping switches here. The tags still show up and can be clicked.
