Message logging
Message logging lets the bot show what a message said when it is later edited or deleted. It does this by briefly caching message content so your edit/delete automations have something to display.
The Message logging feature is off by default. Turn it on from the Features page, then expand its row to choose which channels to log.
What it does
When on, the bot caches the content and author of messages in the channels you choose, for 48 hours. After that the cache entry is dropped automatically.
This cache is what powers:
- The Message edited and Message deleteddefault automations.
- The Message updated and Message deletedcustom automation triggers.
- The
{OldMessage},{NewMessage}, and{Author}placeholders in those automations.
Without message logging on (and the relevant channel logged), an edit/delete automation still fires, but those placeholders fall back to neutral text because there is nothing cached to show.
Settings
On the Features page, expand Message logging:
- Logged channels: the channels to cache messages from. This list starts empty, and an empty list means nothing is cached. You must pick at least one channel for logging to do anything, so turning the feature on alone is not enough.
- Excluded roles: members holding any of these roles are never cached. This keeps moderator and admin messages out of the cache.
Privacy notes
- Only the channels you list are cached, never your whole server.
- Entries are kept for 48 hours, then removed.
- Members with an excluded role are never cached.
- Caching stops as soon as you turn the feature off or remove a channel from the list, and all of a server's cached messages are cleared if the bot leaves.
